Cubanos Pa’lante challenges FL House redistricting map as “Racially Gerrymandered”
On behalf of CPL, the Florida ACLU has filed a civil complaint with the FL House of Representatives and Secretary of State Cord Byrd.
Racial Gerrymandering
Under the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, and the 3rd amendment of the Florida State Constitution.
Florida State House Districts
We allege that the House districts drawn for FL-112, FL-113, FL-114, FL-115, FL-116, FL-118, FL-119 link separate neighborhoods, split established communities, and form irregular shapes.
Joining CPL and the FL ACLU
Engage Miami, the ACLU Club at Florida International University, along with 5 community advocates have filed the complaint
Florida Congressional Districts
FL-26, FL-27, FL-28. For example, Florida’s 26th congressional district stretches across the City of Miami, through Hialeah, ignores geographic boundries such as the Everglades, and ends on the opposite coast of Florida, encompassing Naples in Collier County.
Districting
The map voted into law by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis ignored traditional redistricting criteria; created non-compact shapes, connected disparate neighborhoods, and divided established communities
